TAMBOPATA - PUERTO MALDONADO 4D - 5D
For those who want to experience Peru’s Amazon rainforest and have time for an extended tour, the 5 day / 4 nights Tambopata Colorado is an excellent option. From our Eco Lodge, deep in the heart of Tambopata National Reserve, you will be able to visit the world’s largest macaw clay lick. Located on the Tambopata River, 4-5 hours from our Tambopata Eco Lodge, hundreds of macaws and parrots gather here each day to feed on the minerals essential their diet.
Day 1: Tambopata Eco Lodge
We will meet you at Puerto Maldonado airport and escort you as you board the motorized canoe for the trip up the Tambopata River, which meanders through the teeming vegetation of these virgin forests. You will be served a box lunch onboard. After arrival at the Eco Lodge and time to rest, we will take a walk in the forest surrounding the lodge. During this hike it is possible to spot brown capuchin monkeys, blue morpho butterflies, toucans and other fauna. In the early evening, after a delicious meal, you will have the opportunity to accompany your guide on a walk to spot some of the forest’s nocturnal animals and insects.

Day 2: Trip to the Macaw Clay-lick – Collpa Colorado
One of the highlights of this tour is the visit to the macaw clay lick in the Tambopata National Reserve. After breakfast we will board our motorized canoe and head upriver for approximately 4 hours to Collpa Colorado. After lunch there will be time to explore the surrounding forest with our guide. We will camp close to the macaw clay lick.

Day 3: Full day at Collpa and exploration of the forest trails
A pre-dawn start is required in order to observe the many species of parrots and macaws as they arrive at the clay lick in search of minerals and salts essential to their diet. This clay lick is thought to be the largest in the world, and hundreds of multicolored parrots and macaws gather there each day. After this spectacle, our program will continue with a hike along forest trails, in the hope of spotting monkeys, tapirs, jaguars or other species of fauna. After lunch there will be plenty of time to bathe in the clear waters of a nearby stream. We will spend the night at our campsite near the clay lick.

Day 4: Visit the Collpa
Today we will have a second opportunity to observe the parrots and macaws at the clay lick. It is possible to see dusky-headed parakeets and blue-headed parrots, as well as red and green macaws, blue and yellow macaws, scarlet macaws and red-bellied macaws. After spending the early part of the morning at the clay lick, we will return by boat to the Tambopata Eco Lodge. After our lunch at the lodge, we will hike to Condenado oxbow lake, where it is possible to observe several species of birds and a group of giant otters. That evening, after dinner, you will have an opportunity to search for nocturnal animals along the Tambopata River, aboard our motorized canoe.
Day 5: Departure
After an early breakfast at the lodge, it will be time to return to Puerto Maldonado. The trip along the river is a chance to observe life in the forest during the first hours of the day. At the airport you will receive assistance from our staff during check-in and prior to your departure from Puerto Maldonado.
